PRINCIPAL'S NOTE

Dear Ordway Families,

By now you have heard the wonderful news and are likely feeling the relief of no longer worrying that Ordway will close. But If you had been here on Friday when the news spread among children, you would have been brought to tears to hear our little Otters’ cheering, applauding, and hugging one another. While some may have been unaware of a potential closing, the release of emotions revealed how much many of them had been holding in. Please join our entire faculty in a collective sigh of relief with enormous gratitude to our involved and supportive Ordway School Community members as well as BISD administrators and school board members.

Special appreciation to our PTO who has made the five-day countdown to Valentine’s Day (our Cascade of Kindness!) and mid-winter break extra special - the children (and adults) have enjoyed the theme days (who doesn't love wearing PJs to school!). The Question of the Day for each grade level was a huge hit and I’m sure it will be requested to do again by popular demand. Best of all, our island seniors will receive the children’s beautiful valentines, and our building’s PTO fundraising increased on top of that! Our PTO’s generosity helps fund each year’s K-5 yearbooks, Outdoor Education for fourth graders, etc.

Huge shout out to our teachers preparing for the upcoming Parent-Teacher Conferences! I am always awestruck at the thought and consideration invested by my talented staff in their work with your children - regardless of their role, each Ordway staff member takes great pride and care everyday. Please feel free to stop by and say hi as I am here too during conferences.

Enjoy vacation with your family and friends,

Debra

CASCADE OF KINDNESS

We're in the homestretch of our Cascade of Kindness fundraising campaign, and your support is needed now more than ever!

Every dollar counts towards supporting initiatives like 4th-grade outdoor education, the upcoming Carnival, exciting assemblies, teacher grants, and more. We are at 75% of our goal and
need your help to make the end of the year truly spectacular for all our Ordway Otters!. Your gift of ANY amount is appreciated and immediately benefits our students, staff, and school. Thank you for donating and making a difference!

And - there are prizes! Your gift today not only contributes to your student's class standings (Maestra Claudia's class is currently in the lead, but it's anyone's game at this point!), but also enters you into a drawing to win exciting experiences from local businesses or Otter-ific incentives, like Carnival perks. Donate today and show your support!

COUNSELOR'S NOTE - CHANGING FAMILIES

Ordway students whose families are experiencing or have experienced a separation, divorce or re-marriage may find that these family changes generate strong feelings which interfere with schoolwork, social adjustment, and friendships. While some children experience sadness it is also common for students to withdraw or act out in anger. It is often helpful for students to get together with other children experiencing similar feelings and talk with someone who is not emotionally involved in the family changes.

Ordway Counselor Janette Dodge will be offering groups for students first through fourth grade which will meet once a week for six weeks during their lunch time. Groups will start the first week of March. If you are interested in having your child participate in one of these groups, or have any questions please call or e-mail Janette Dodge at 780-1455/jdodge@bisd303.org by February 27th.

HIGHLY CAPABLE REFERRAL WINDOW

Spring window opening for Highly Capable (HC) referrals

Bainbridge Island School District offers services to students who have been identified as highly capable. Highly capable students are those who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels. Services are provided for students in grades K - 12. In the Spring referral window, all students in grades K-11 may be referred by teachers, family, or community members.

If your student is in 2nd or 5th grade you do not need to complete a referral because every student in these grades will be screened to determine eligibility for HC programming. Specific information about the screening process for 2nd and 5th grade will be shared through your student's school in late February.

For grades, K, 1, 3, 4, 6-11; If you are interested in having your student evaluated for our Highly Capable program, please visit our Highly Capable Webpage for more information. The referral submission link will be posted there on February 2nd and remain open until February 16th.
